Rectangle pro mac12/31/2023 ![]() ![]() It is a productivity booster, and it's an app that's fairly new (launched 2019). If you want to launch it or not when you log in, snapping by dragging (like Windows users), hiding the icon, checking for updates, etc.Īs written in the title, from my point of view, Rectangle should be installed by default with macOS. The last window is the preferences themselves. All of them! (you need to click on the arrow located down the left-bottom corner, and they will deploy) For me there's no need to customize them because, once you used them for a while, you get used to it, and you don't need to change them at all (at least I didn't). If we move to the commands window, we can customize literally all the options. I'm not going to explain the next section because I think it's self-explanatory. ![]() Moving on to the next section, the thirds section, I think its made to squeeze ultrawide displays (34" to 49"). In my case, for example, it has been very useful to study many things that are related one to each other without having to change or close the windows I needed. Top corners, if you are working with big screens, can be used to visualize different presentations, images, videos (or whatever you can make small in one corner and still see everything you need). Most commonly used for people are left and right half but, what if you have two screens and one is tilted 90º? □ Here are all the options you have with it:Īt first, it may seem like a lot of options but, if you keep in mind all the different screen sizes available right now, it makes a lot of sense. ![]() Windows has what Rectangle has by default, but not with the same amount of options. I have two 27" displays at home and I needed to organize my windows better to maximize the space (I was always full screen for both). On top of all that, Rectangle is also open-source.I never did until the end of last year, when I bought my new MacBook Pro 13" (not the M1). Since it's based on Spectacle, which is no longer being maintained, Rectangle is obviously a better choice, and most of the other alternatives don't offer as many features without also including a price tag. Window management just becomes much easier, especially once you get accustomed to the snap areas. Almost indispensable window management app for macOSĪfter trying out Rectangle, you'll likely find it hard to use a Mac without the app ever again. You can also use a hotkey to restore it to its original size and position ( ⌃⌥⌫ by default). Once you unsnap the window, it will return to its previous dimensions. It can be difficult to figure out all the snap areas at first, but there is a helpful guide available on the project's GitHub page. Once it’s downloaded just install and run. Just got to the Rectangle app site and download the app. With these gestures, you can send a window to one half of the screen, maximize it, move it to a corner of the desktop, or even resize it to cover one or two-thirds of the screen area. Getting Rectangle set up on your Mac computer or Macbook is super simple. Essentially, when you drag a window to a certain part of the screen's edge, it will be moved and resized accordingly. Snap windows to screen edgesĪ similar feature has been available on Windows since Windows 7, and it's simply too useful not to bring to macOS as well. If you need help at any time, just click the app's menu bar icon to see a list of all the configured hotkeys. Using key combinations, you can move windows to one half, one corner, or even one-third of the screen, resize them freely, move them to a different display, maximize them, and so on.Īll these keyboard shortcuts are fully customizable, so you can define combinations that are easier for you to remember. This part of the app's functionality is pretty straightforward. It adds customizable hotkeys for moving and resizing windows, in addition to a Windows-like snap assist function that works as well as the original. Rectangle can revolutionize macOS window management using both of the above-mentioned methods. If you're looking for maximum efficiency, keyboard shortcuts have always been quicker, and borrowing an established Windows feature can't hurt either. ![]() Window management in macOS isn't always the smoothest or most intuitive experience, despite the number of tools Apple has designed to help you out. ![]()
